OAK RIDGE
Oak Ridge had a wonderful first couple of days.  Teachers and kids returned happy and excited to learn.  Thank you to all of the faculty and staff for their “all hands on deck” approach to welcoming the children.

We’d like to congratulate Cathy Lemay, our  Oak Ridge Teacher of the Year. Cathy has been a Sandwich stand out for many years working as a classroom teacher, a specialist and a Special Educator.  Please read about her wonderful career, along with the other Employees of the Year on Sandwich Learns Together.

Finally, we’d like to remind families to join us on Facebook and Twitter to get updates on all things Oak Ridge.  Here you’ll find reminders about upcoming events like Open House on 9/20 and 9/22 as well as highlights on all the great work going on in our school.

STEM
The STEM Academy welcomes all new and returning students to the school. On August 29 the incoming 7th graders had an opportunity to tour their classrooms and receive their new schedules after a brief introduction in the auditorium.

The STEM keynote speaker this year is Woods Hole artist Joan Lederman who combines the arts with science by using deep sea sediments at her ceramics studio, The Soft Earth. Her pottery has sold around the world and she has had extensive experience exhibiting her work and presenting at several universities and institutions.

The STEM Academy Science Advisory Board is meeting on September 15. Plans are underway once again to sponsor the New England Regional ROV competition as well as to work on supporting the STEM garden and a new recycling program.

The 7th graders will be touring the Massachusetts Maritime Academy this month which will include a tour of the training ship the Kennedy and the 8th grade will begin their participation in the town’s shellfish restoration program this month as well.

Author Mike Lupica is visiting the STEM students on September 16. Several of his books have been available for borrowing in the school lobby.

SHS
Back to School at SHS can be summed up with the word teamwork! The custodians worked so hard all summer through tough conditions to make our school shine. Teaches and students felt so welcome and  cared for when we saw th shiny tiles and freshly painted walls. All summer long, members of the SHS student leadership team worked hard to prepare a  warm welcome for the Class of 2020 and also our new grade 7 Squires! The energy last Thursday night at Freshmen Orientation was a preview of a great year ahead. Now, the senior mentors under the skilled hand of Mr. Dumas, are hard at work to forge connections with our newest members of SHS. It has been said over and over again how comfortable the new freshmen are and how focused they are as they ease into their classes, join clubs and make strong contributions to athletics. This week, our football team opens at home on Saturday afternoon at 12:00 at DeConto Stadium. the night before they are hosting a BKP bar- b-q to welcome the visiting team, a new tradition. Next week, young performers will line up to audition for the fall show, It;s a Wonderful Life! as students and families look ahead to what promises to be a great production.

Teachers have all distributed classroom expectations, chromebooks and ipads are charged, and students are already engaged in some animated and exciting discussions in their classes. We have so enjoyed welcoming our new staff and look forward to teaching them all about Blue Knight Pride!
