Getting to Know: Kim Mello – Forestdale School

Kim Mello will be teaching 4th grade at Forestdale School after working as a substitute teacher in Sandwich for the past two year. Ms. Mello is a graduate of Rivier University, where she earned a B.A. in Elementary Education/Special Education/Human Development.  She is the proud mom of two SPS students – her daughter Kailey is a third grader at Forestdale and her son Gage is a sophomore at SHS. Ms. Mello’s husband Rich served 11 years in the Navy, and is now working at Hydroid in Pocasset as a field technician, building, repairing and training customers on autonomous underwater vehicles.

Ms. Mello answered a few questions to help us learn about her.

What excites you about teaching in Sandwich?

I love how welcoming and positive the community is.  Since I moved here two years ago, I’ve made so many new connections both personally and professionally.  The educators are quick to lend each other a hand and offer support, which creates such a tight knit, caring environment both to teach and to learn.

What is your favorite teaching memory from the past few years?

It’s really hard to pick a favorite memory.  I have been lucky enough to witness so many moments when a student has said something genuinely insightful or incredibly witty or truly compassionate, and those instances just reinforce what an amazing profession teaching is and how lucky we are to spend our days with these extraordinary young people.

What is your favorite memory as a student?

I was painfully shy and socially awkward in my middle school years but I was lucky enough to have a very caring teacher in sixth grade that took me under her wing and gave me some of her free time and attention.  One day we discovered we both liked to tap dance and she asked me to bring my tap shoes to school.  During recess the following day, we tap danced on her guided reading table since her room was covered in carpet.  I will never forget Mrs. Estee.

What might we be surprised to know about you?

Including childhood, I have moved twelve times and have lived in New York, New Hampshire, Virginia, California, and Massachusetts.  Luckily, I love to take road trips and see new places so my transient lifestyle has suited me.
