Patti Leary, Wing Literacy Coach, Presents at National Conference

On Sunday, November 2, 2014, Patti Leary was joined by Wing Kindergarten teacher Lynne Phinney and Pre-school teacher Beth Hickson as she presented at a session called “Language Rich Literacy Beginnings: Expanding Children’s Language and Literacy Development in PreK and Kindergarten Classrooms. ”  Cindy Downend, Assistant Director, Primary Literacy Collaborative at Lesley University co-presented with Ms. Leary at the Literacy for All Conference in Providence, R.I.

Literacy for All attracts nearly a thousand educators from all over the United States and beyond to attend 100+ workshops on topics of literacy. The annual Literacy for All Conference is the Northeast region’s leading literacy professional development event for teachers, administrators, literacy coaches, reading specialists, and educators trained in Reading Recovery.

Ms. Leary’s workshop was attended by a wide ranging group of teachers and administrators from California, New York, Washington D.C., Philadelphia, Vermont, New Hampshire and Massachusetts. The discussion was passionate and lively as the group explored the research about the power of oral language, particularly for our youngest children. The participants also developed ideas for ways to increase the amount of teaching and application of oral language in their school day.

The Sandwich Public Schools is proud to have a staff member presenting at such a prestigious conference and also celebrates the teachers who devoted a Sunday to extend their professional learning.
