Latin Students Compete at Harvard

On Saturday March 28, a team of students, accompanied by Latin teacher Mrs. Moynahan, from Sandwich STEM Academy and Sandwich High School attended the Certamen Competition at Harvard University in Boston. According to the Massachusetts Junior Classical League, “Certamen is a Latin Jeopardy-­style game that tests students’ skill in the Latin language and knowledge of Roman culture. Widely played at the regional, state, and national levels, Certamen is an excellent way to enrich a student’s experience in the Latin classroom and to give a competitive edge to the Classics.”

The STEM team competed in the Novice Division and the SHS team competed in the Intermediate Division. Members of the STEM team are Alec Abramson, Evan Abramson, Jason McMahon, Cam Ottaviano(in absentia), and Ella Strano;members of the SHS team are Ethan Carig, Bridget Carl, Dan Fortier, Elizabeth Lorino, and Haileigh Stathopoulos.

Teams from local school districts as well as NYC, Washington DC and Milwaukee participated in the competition. Members of the Certamen team would like to thank Dr. Booras, Mrs. Alison Nelson, Mrs. Carl, Mr. Fortier, and Mrs. Strano for tremendous support in this endeavor.The students from Sandwich represented their respective schools well as they enjoyed their inaugural appearance in the competition. They are looking forward to returning next year!
