Captain DeConto’s Navy Buddies to Attend Stadium Dedication Ceremony!

Capt. DeConto was a stand-out soccer player at Sandwich High School in the early 80’s. He wore #7. Last fall, Liz Wegman, a current stand-out soccer player at Sandwich High School, created and distributed patches in Capt. DeConto’s honor.

Assistant Secretary of the Navy Sean J. Stackley will by flying up from Washington, D.C., to attend the dedication of the Captain Gerald F. DeConto USN Veterans Memorial Stadium on Friday, Oct. 23.

Stackley was a classmate of Gerry DeConto at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis. He served as a Surface Warfare Officer with captain DeConto.

Fellow USNA classmates Sean Cate (class president), Carl Rehling (DeConto’s roommate), Chuck Dixon, Dave Jackson, Jon Jaques, and Rusty Myrick will also attend the ceremonies.

Stackley will serve as featured speaker at the formal dedication ceremony at the stadium. The ceremony begins at 6:05 p.m. and the public is invited.

The Sandwich Blue Knights football team faces top-ranked Marshfield at 7 p.m. following the dedication.

A Sandwich native and SHS graduate, DeConto was killed during the 9/11 terrorist attacks while serving at the Pentagon.
