March for Science in Sandwich on Saturday!

By Bridget Carl, Civic Action Team, Class of 2017

The Satellite March for Science is the Sandwich High School Civic Action Team’s first civic project. Our club is centered around developing projects that spread awareness and create change in our schools, especially since we do not offer a specific civics class at the high school.

During this time of political uncertainty, peaceful protests have become a popular source of activism and an outlet for the average American to have their voices heard. We saw the great impact of this at the Women’s March, and when we heard about another March on Washington- the March for Science- we knew that this would be a great way to start making change.

The Women’s March brought together the entire world, and we saw  small communities on every continent getting involved. The March for Science will have the same global impact, and we wanted to bring that international enthusiasm to Sandwich. Initially we thought of planning the March for those who could not make it to Boston for a larger rally, but then we realized that since Cape Cod is such an important area for environmental studies, our March would provide a much larger impact for the community.

A pillar of our Call to Action is to create a generation of scientifically conscientious people, so by having this March be planned by high schoolers, we know that we can have the greatest impact on young people. If you’re interested in being part this rally, please come to the Sandwich March for Science at the H.T. Wing School gazebo area at 10 AM on April 22, Earth Day. Bring your signs!
