Election Day Off for Students…All Day PD for Teachers!

Tuesday, November 6th is Election Day – school is closed, as our buildings are used as polling places…

Tuesday is also this year’s All-Day In-Service Professional Development day for our staff members grades PK-12! Staff have expressed great interest in exploring the topic of Social and Emotional Learning and this day will build on initiatives discussed by Dr. Gould in her third installment of the Blue Knight Spotlight podcast last month.

Staff members will begin their day at Sandwich High School with Dr. Gould speaking about the district’s commitment to Differentiation and what that means in classrooms for our students. Following Dr. Gould, there will be a keynote address for all with Charlie Appelstein, author of No Such Thing as a Bad Kid. Mr. Appelstein will share his thoughts on a wide array of topics; from the definition of strength-based practice and communication principles to creative cognitive behavioral strategies.

Next, staff will have the opportunity to customize their own PD! Two time “blocks” will allow participants to choose from several different offerings. Topics for PK-6 staff range from Ways to Support Behavioral Health through Responsive Classroom and Mindful Movement to Appreciating the Power of Diverse Literature and a follow-up offering with Mr. Appelstein. Middle and secondary staff topics include sessions on Cultural Diversity through Student Voices, Mindfulness in the HS classroom, Understanding Anxiety and more.

Staff members will then join with their grade-level colleagues or departments for an opportunity to reflect on their time exploring social and emotional learning concepts to finish up the day.
