Introducing Leah Koenecke, 2nd Grade Teacher at Forestdale!

What inspired you to be a teacher?
I have always been an enthusiastic learner. I wanted to share my love and excitement for learning with others.

Why did you choose Sandwich for this stage of your professional journey?
This is my 7th year teaching. From my experience, I knew that I wanted to be in a primary school with a strong sense of community and a child-centered focus. Forestdale is truly a family of learners and the commitment to student learning is undeniable.

Can you share a fond memory of yourself as a student at the same grade level you now teach?!
When I was in second grade, we did a play of the story, Stone Soup. I was the part of the “Old Lady”. We got to perform in front of our families and the other second grade classes. It was a lot of fun!

What is the most important thing you have learned about teaching so far? About learning?
Being flexible and responsive to the needs of the students in front of you is essential!

What is your favorite type of technology in or out of the classroom?
The Apple TV has been a great resource in my classroom. When my iPhone is paired, I can use my camera app to show students’ work on the big screen. This has been an effective way to model students’ work and expected outcomes. The kids love being on the “jumbotron”!

What hobbies do you enjoy outside of school?
My favorite thing to do is spend time exploring the outdoors with my three boys. Discovering new hiking trails and finding unique shells on the beach are a few of my favorite things to do. We love to have fun in the sun!

What would you like our community to know about teachers in the Sandwich schools?
The teachers at Forestdale are passionate about teaching and reaching each and every student! It’s all about the students!
