STEM Academy Students Supporting the Sandwich Food Pantry in December…

by Jeff Duffany, Social Studies Teacher – STEM Academy

The newly formed STEM Academy Student Council, which is made up of both 7th and 8th graders, decided to run a Food Drive for the Sandwich Food Pantry during the week of December 8-12.

To infuse some fun into the Food Drive, we made it a competition among advisories (Home Rooms) with the advisory that donated the most getting a breakfast on December 22nd .

The response was overwhelming the entire week!  In total, we donated over 2,200 items to the food pantry.  This is over 86 bags of food, according to the Sandwich Food Pantry count.

The event was organized and run by the Student Council.  Student council members counted, collected, and met the food pantry people to deliver the items. The students enjoyed planning and executing the Food Drive – it was Project Based Learning to benefit the community at large.

Mrs. Sabetta’s class donated the most items and were the winners of the breakfast, although most would say that there were many winners as a result of this First Ever STEM Academy Food Drive!

Non-perishable items of all sorts were collected.

We were amazed at the amount of donations that were collected in just one week.
