2014 All Cape In-Service for School Nurses: The School Age Child: Conditions Impacting Health and Learning

by Carilyn Raines, RN – Nurse Leader for Sandwich Public Schools

The SPS Health Services Department had the opportunity to plan and host the annual All Cape In-Service for School Nurses here at the Forestdale School on Friday, October 10, 2014!

With the support of Dr. Richard Canfield – and in collaboration with Cape Cod Collaborative – the Sandwich nurses have hosted this Cape-wide professional development event for four consecutive years now.

Each year a common theme is chosen with featured speakers from a variety of specialty areas/backgrounds presenting on many health-related topics of interest for school nurses, this year the in-service focused on behavioral/mental health issues and the school age child. Previous programming addressed various topics related to concussive injuries, disordered eating and public health concerns impacting schools.

This annual event provides an opportunity for school nurses across the Cape to come together to network and share in the discussion on so many of the topics/concerns impacting our school children today, issues that potentially impact optimal health and learning. In addition to the various health professionals who participated in the day – which included Dr. Richard Bloom, our School Physician Consultant – the school nurses were also joined by the various community vendors that provide a variety of services and supports to schools nurses. Organization such as School Health, CF Medical, The Children’s Health Market, Cambridge College and Healthmaster contributed to a wonderful breakfast and luncheon for all those in attendance – all catered by our very own Food Services Department, Whitson’s!
