Getting to Know: Gretchen Phillips, Wing School Librarian

Gretchen Phillips is the new H.T. Wing School Library Media Specialist. She is a familiar face at Wing, having worked as an Intervention ESP, and long term sub in Kindergarten. Before becoming a teacher, she worked for Morgan Stanley and Prudential Securities in Boston and New York.  Mrs. Phillips has a B.A. in Comparative Literature from Simmons College, and a M.Ed. from Lesley University.
Mrs. Phillips answered a few questions to help the entire Sandwich Public Schools community to get to know her.
What excites you about teaching in Sandwich?
I love the Lesley Literacy Collaborative approach that Sandwich teaches.  It is so important that we encourage a culture of reading among students and families.
What is your favorite teaching memory from the past few years?
Recently we have been reading traditional literature.  In 4th and 5th grade we’re revisiting “Little Red Riding Hood”.  It has been really wonderful to see students think critically about a familiar story.  They have had great questions and lively, enthusiastic discussions of the text.
What is your favorite memory as a student?
In 4th grade our teacher, Mrs. Greeno, introduced us to readers theater.  We would write plays based on books we were reading, make costumes, and perform our plays for classmates.  It was so much fun!
What might we be surprised to know about you?
I walk over 7 miles every day in the library!
Family Info:
I’ve been married for 13 years to my husband Brock, a UX/UI Engineer.  We have two sons, Reese and Cameron, and a dog Benjamin Franklin.
WELCOME to Mrs. Phillips !
