To Ms. Novero, With Thanks

The following letter was published in the Sandwich Enterprise last week; we wanted to share it with the SPS community.

by JANELL B. HOFMANN

It is with deep gratitude that I write this letter to publicly thank Elena Novero. Ms. Novero is the physical education teacher at the Henry T. Wing School and also the founder and director of the Wing School dance program.

The program is open to all children, at all levels of dance experience, starting in grade 3. There is no charge to participate; all costumes, sets, and choreography are designed and created by Mrs. Novero; and she volunteers all of her time. At this point, I am certain she has totaled thousands of hours of creative thought and serious labor. Rehearsals take place before school, and each semester culminates with a performance.

This week was the 7th annual “Nutcracker” and the final one to be held at the Wing School. To watch hundreds of boys and girls dance together with their peers (and even some teachers!) in front of family, friends and their school community, is to witness pure joy. The pride on the faces of the children as they work to show what they have learned, practiced and mastered in their own way truly reflects the beauty of the season.

For six years, my sons and daughters have participated and it is a holiday highlight for our family. Mrs. Novero goes above and beyond what is expected of any educator, making this activity accessible to all with a role for everyone. How lucky we are that all children can feel this deep sense of belonging right in our own village. I know for sure, the Wing School “Nutcracker” has created lifelong memories for our children.

Before each performance, Mrs. Novero always says to the audience, “This is our gift to you.” To Mrs. Novero and all of the past and present performers, we can’t thank you enough.
